Raman Singh Enter Politics
Raman Singh was moved by the principles and ideologies of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh from his student days. During 1976-1977 he became the President of Bharatiya Jan Sangh Yuva Morcha at his native place Khawardha.
Political Journey of Raman Singh
- In 1983-84 he was the Municipal Councillor of Sheetla ward of Kawardha.
- In 1990 he was elected as a Member of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
- In 1993 he was re-elected as a Member of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
- In 1999 Raman Singh was elected as Member of the 13th Lok Sabha.
- From October 1999 to January 2003, he was the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.
- In 2004 he was elected as a Member of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly.
- In 2008 he was re-elected a Member of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly.
- On December 7, 2003, Raman Singh took oath as the second Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.
- On December 12, 2008, he again became the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.
Achievements before becoming Chief Minister of Chattisgarh
- During his term as an MLA in Madhya Pradesh in 1993-98, he became a member of the Public Accounts Committee and also worked in editing the Vidhan Sabha magazine called Vidhayini.
- Raman Singh led the delegations of the Indian Trade Fair to different countries like Nepal, Dubai, Israel, and Palestine.
- In 2003 Raman Singh was made the State Party Chief of Chattisgarh and given the responsibility to pursue state elections preparations, which he delivered with unprecedented success.
Achievements as Chief Minister of Chattisgarh
- He banned Naxalite organizations in Chhattisgarh in 2002 under the “Salwa Judum” initiative, a move supported by the opposition party as well, led by Mahendra Karma who was assassinated by Naxalites on 25 May 2012.
- Ranked by India Today as the number one Chief Minister of India in 2005.
- It was during his term in 2006-07 that Chhattisgarh came first in India with regard to implementation of the twenty-point developmental program of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The assessment of the same was done by Statistics and Programme Implementation Ministry, Government of India.
- To recognize the role of Chattisgarh in its efforts on human development, the United Nations has bestowed the state with its highest award.
- The state has witnessed excellent fiscal management, which was acclaimed all over the country.
- Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana is implemented in Chattisgarh for the last three years.
- The CRISIL runners-up award was presented to Chhattisgarh for its work on urban modernization by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.
- Massive investments in roads, electrical infrastructure, and water resources are coming up. The Union Ministry for Industries declared Chhattisgrah as the leading state in investments in January 2007.
Activities are undertaken by Raman Singh as Chief Minister
- In 2004-2005, Raman Singh visited different countries like the USA, Canada, and the UK, inviting foreign companies to invest in Chhattisgarh, which saw a tremendous response.
- Raman Singh participated in the 3rd Annual South Africa International Trade and Investment Conference held at Sandton, Johannesburg, in October 2009.
Awards Won by Raman Singh
- In 2004-2005, the Chhattisgarhi NRI Association and the Indo American Community of North America honored him with the Outstanding Person award.
- He received the Bharat Asmita Shreshtha Jan Pratinidhi award by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, K. G. Balakrishnan, on February 3, 2008.
